We will be covering each of these “7 Laws” of Internet Research, and help you tap into them to gain a tangible advantage for your business.

Law 4- Frequency
Yesterday’s search does not equal today’s search. If I did a search yesterday, today there is more and different information available. And conversely, today’s search does not equal yesterday’s search. It sounds like the same thing but it is different. The Internet provides a “time machine” of sorts. If you wanted, you could go on the “way back machine” and see one of my first companies. I pressed t-shirts and had the website tshirts.net. You can still go back and see what I was doing back in 1993, although it’s no longer available.

What is the implication of this? It means that you want to save your results and be able to see patterns and usage of information over time. From day to day, it’s really important to save results. Read More

Law 3- Iteration
Research is fluid and changes. The Internet is not static; it is constantly being updated and changed. Information put on it is updated by the minute. For this reason, you can not treat the Internet like a typical database which can be fairly static or is updated on a predetermined frequency.

Let’s go back to our prior example. What if you were to go out and do a query on Director of Benefits? We have established that you will not get everything due to potential permutations. However, you will learn that there are 12 different titles that mean Director of Benefits. In other words, you will learn from the first search and then you will use those understandings to improve your search.

Did you know that Profiler can fill in missing e-mails and phone numbers for contact?

Here are two powerful features in Profiler. With a simple “right click”, Profiler can review and determine the structure of the e-mail addresses for the contacts listed and use the structure to fill in empty e-mail. The e-mail is then color coded so you can see which e-mails were found versus filled in.

You can also fill in a phone number for a contact. Select the contact or contacts, right click and select “fill empty phones”. Filling in the phone number will take the company main phone number and add it for any contact that does not have a phone number.

Both features can be used for one or multiple contacts and give you additional avenues of contact.

Last month, we started our series on the universal laws that govern the Internet. We focused on the first law, Permutations, and how understanding them would increase your search capabilities. Now we’re moving on to the second law in the “7 Laws of Internet Research.”

Law 2 - Completeness
Now on to the second of the seven laws - Completeness. You will notice that a lot of these laws intertwine. When you use search engines as a medium for Internet Research, you need
to understand what is the level of completeness of the information when it is returned.

Understand the scope of the research before starting. Again
this does blend into the law of permutation. What are you
looking for? You have 15 different companies, how do you
describe those different companies? How many different potential people are at those 15 different companies? Where
are the locations of those 15 different companies? What are
their hiring trends?Human engineering is probably the most
important skill in getting the most out of your use of the Internet as a source of intelligence.

Company Background:
Hire A Hero is a non-profit initiative that brings together military job seekers and military friendly employers by utilizing web 2.0 networking features. It allows people with a variety of backgrounds to participate in helping those with military experience find meaningful employment.

To achieve their objectives, Hire A Hero reaches out to employers throughout the United States. They have three primary goals: 1) to educate employers on the quality, skills and commitment that returning service members can offer them as employees, 2) to enlighten prospective employers that the nation unemployment rate of service members is 3 times higher than the national average and 3) to drive traffic to the Hire A Hero web site where employers can submit employment opportunities for service members and service members can find employment opportunities.

Challenge:
The key challenge facing Hire A Hero is to identify “service member friendly” technology, manufacturing and professional services organizations. Like most non-profits, Hire A Hero has limited financial resources and is unable to invest in large scale marketing and PR campaigns necessary to build brand and awareness. Their strategy focuses on the execution of a grass roots campaign that uses “guerilla” marketing to generate interest.

Law 1- Permutation
Permutations is the concept of taking one thing and being able to say it in many different ways, hundreds of ways, deconstructing it to the very nature of what it is you’re looking for.

Here are some of the permutations that you would need to consider: Director of Benefits, Benefits Administrator, Benefits Advisor, Benefits Manager, etc, etc. If you do a search on Google and type in “Director of Benefits”, you get 47,000 results. That’s the first pop. Now if you put the local company name in that you’re searching for plus Director of benefits, you get 101. Using Microsoft, which is a big corporation as a test, type in: director of benefits: site: Microsoft.com.” You will receive approximately 30,000 results. So, if you were only looking for Director of Benefits, using a search engine, how do you get to the real quality information that you need? Permutation, on titles, on company names, IBM Corporation, IBM Corp, International Business Machines, these are all permutations of the same thing. If you think in terms of permutation, if you think multi-prompt, you’re going to get a lot more results.
